Memory tip for 14th of April 2011

Yesterday I told you that small doses of caffeine can boost your short term memory. Today I want to talk a little bit how to remember numbers. I will cover the topic in a few posts as there is a lot to say about remembering number and there are quite a few techniques to do that. One of the best ways how to do that is to use a symbol (some sort of an object) to associate each number with. So, what you will need to do is to take numbers from 0 to 10 and assign some unique symbol to each number.

It would be good if the object that you will try to associate a number with would be similar in appearance to the number. I would advise you to select a few objects for each number and check which object would fit each number best. Then learn the objects in association with numbers. You will see that this technique will help you to remember telephones, credit card numbers, passwords and pin codes much better.

Here are examples of objects for each number:

0 – ring, sun
1-  candle, pen
2 – swan
3 – clover
4 – chair
5 – hook
6 – curled up snake
7 – scythe
8 – snowman
9 – Tennis racket
10 – a chariot

You may want to think of your own examples and use them. It would be best if you use those that fit you best. Tomorrow I will continue about methods of remembering numbers better.
