Memory tip for 20th of April 2011

Yesterday I finished giving my tips on how to remember names. Today I will continue with general tips that help you to improve your memory. My tip for today is: categorize things you have to remember. This tip is a supplement for remembering long lists. It could also be a good addition to a journey method, which in my opinion is the best for remembering huge lists. If you are doing some bigger shopping than just buying a few things you will definitely see that there are groups of products that are similar in nature and when you find this put them into categories (in your mind).

Let us say your list is: milk, chocolate, bananas, soap, cheese, cups, pears, washing powder, oranges, sweets, frying pan and butter. Now you have to put into categories and your shopping list would look like this:

  Milk products: milk, cheese, butter
Confectionery: chocolate, sweets
Fruit: bananas, pears, oranges
Dishes: cups, frying pan
Things in your bathroom: soap, washing powder

Now you will simply have to decide which order you want to remember. You may choose it as you like best. Depending on the store you go shopping to you may remember the things in the way they are placed in your local shop. Each store has its own order, so it would be good to practice your memory by learning exact order of goods placement in your favorite store. Then grouping of things according to a logical sequence will be much easier.
